Anything about the orange menace is cringe-worthy. Now it appears Vance has decided how he'll step up to POTUS: by following in Trump's footsteps - or lies. Take your pick.
I’m posting my free weekly newsletter that dropped this morning — and every Sunday morning. It’s a mix of politics and pop culture. This week has a heavy does of SNL given the 50th anniversary special tonight.
I’d love everyone to sign up to receive it every week. IMHO it’s a nice mix of insight into the frightening and dire times we find ourselves in and some fun stuff to take the edge off.
I also embed a curated Spotify playlist in the newsletter every week. It’s a fun listen while you drink your Sunday coffee. Or maybe shots?
When you write about Trump's plan to destroy the Department of Education, please include the damage the attack on the Department of Education will do to children with disabilities.
I have a now 46-year-old son with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He suffered major brain damage due to a seizure disorder which developed when he was 5 months old. Doctors then predicted all the things he would never be able to do including walking and talking. They were wrong. Why?
His special education teachers went to work every day to help him reach his full potential rather than focusing on his deficits. Federal laws passed when he was an infant recognized what children with disabilities needed and that they should have the same opportunity for a free and appropriate education every other child had.
Those laws and the funding they provided meant that he started public school for a few hours a week when he was two. He went full-time from age 4 on. He will never be a "normal" person, but he walks, talks, knows how to ride a bicycle and to use his IPAD. He loves music.
Every child with disabilities needs and deserves the kind of education my son received and benefitted from. Without it, our government is simply writing off millions of kids. Those children and their families matter.
I share your concern about the damage that will be done to educational opportunity and equity for students with disabilities if Trump "terminates" the Department of Education.
I hope to focus on the details of the damage that can hopefully be avoided. My piece for The Spy to be published on Wednesday focuses on higher education (my area of expertise when I worked on Capitol Hill and as an attorney). That piece is already finished. I hope to write about the impact on persons with disabilities in a future piece.
Well, higher education, the field in which both my husband and I worked all of our lives, is essential to give special educators the skills needed to help people with disabilities. People become qualified to teach children with disabilities by going to college. At a higher level, people qualify to become speech therapists. occupational therapists and physical therapists by going to school at the masters level. So, it's all part of the same picture. When he was a toddler, my son screamed a lot. His problem was frustration. He needed or wanted something, but he couldn't tell us what it was. His special education teacher taught him sign language which he adopted gladly because it helped him communicate. That was the crucial bridge to learning to talk. She learned how to do that in college. The basic message is that we need people who have the experience and skills to succeed in every field of endeavor. Without education, we won't have the people we need, and we will no longer be world leaders.
It’s worse than that .

John. Looking forward to reading your article in The Spy.
I have been reading of the changes made at the University of Texas and am gobsmacked that such a thing is possible.
I also am aware of most of the things you listed, but did not know of Hegsbeth and Prosbiac ( sp on both) traveling together to Germany. That figures.
The pieces are falling into place.
Thanks for your concern and for being active in highlighting these threats. I feel better just knowing you are on the case.

It was a cringe-worthy week for sure. Is there a strategy here? I keep thinking, "this is not who we are!"

Absolutely, Linda.
Thank you for your comment.
