Yes, the public seems asleep. In trauma-response lingo, people have "frozen". Optionally, some have run away (some into the arms of the perpetrator, as with Stockholm's Syndrome), and some have started to fight. Freezing in place or running away will not work, so it comes down to how to fight. Each of us has different abilities, but it it not about who will fight - it will take each of us in our own way.
