Trump Writes of Regime Change
Worrisome, but par for the course from the President
I remain fearful that Iran will retaliate for Saturday’s attacks on the country’s nuclear facilities. Even if you agree with the President and Israel that it was “necessary” to destroy the facilities, you should be worried that a larger war in the Middle East is about to start—or has already begun.
I was pleased on Sunday when Secretary of Defense Hegseth reiterated that the Iran attack was not about regime change. That was mildly reassuring because it is more likely that the current leadership of Iran will retaliate against the U.S. if they believe the U.S. will attempt to kill or otherwise replace them. Unfortunately, while Hegseth said the right thing, President Trump didn’t.
On social media, an inappropriate place to conduct wartime communications or messaging, Trump wrote that regime change in Iran could “Make Iran Great Again.” If that sounds stupid to you, it is because it is.
I remain hopeful that the attack on Iran, now a thing of the past, will prove to be a positive development for world peace. I feared Iran having a nuclear weapon. I like to think that President Obama’s agreement on Iran, which included Iran dismantling its nuclear facilities, would have worked and eliminated the need for bombing Iran. However, Trump withdrew from that agreement in his first term. We will never know if military action was “unavoidable.”
We do know, however, that the President writing about regime change makes the possibility of a wider war more likely. The President’s other actions in the wake of the attack, such as congratulating the B-2 pilots on Truth Social, as if they were star athletes who had just won the Super Bowl, make the world a much more dangerous place.
