Just dogs and cats today . . . and Laura Loomer
After the story about RFK, Jr. eating a dog a month ago, I thought I’d heard the last about dog-eating for the rest of the 2024 presidential campaign. I was wrong. I failed to anticipate Laura Loomer whispering into Trump’s ear: “Just tell them that immigrants in Ohio are eating cats and dogs. And if that doesn’t work to raise the immigration issues, say they are eating Springfield, Ohio’s geese.”
I don’t know if that conversation occurred, but besides hearing more than my fill about pet eating, I also learned about Laura Loomer this week. Call me an ostrich with my head buried in the sand, but I had never heard of Loomer. Now I have to find space on the clown car for one more—Paul Gosar (right-wing dentist serving in Congress), please move over.
So many responsible parties have refuted Trump’s claim about Ohio immigrants’ attacks that we will see fewer memes on X and other social media platforms. Those who see the 2024 election as entertainment will have to move on to something else.
Assuming Springfield’s pets are not being eaten, Laura Loomer becomes the big story. Earlier today, I wrote a piece on Medium about her. As they say in New Jersey, she is a piece of work—a certifiable nut.
Trump aides are urging the President to part company with her, but Trump seems to like her. She looks smart in a “Donald Trump Did Nothing Wrong” t-shirt. She also is the type likely to reassure Trump that he won the September 10 debate.
Loomer is now a national figure. A quick visit to X using “Loomer” as a search word found speculation that she and Donald are an item. One particularly nasty poster (no doubt a communist) speculated Loomer is pregnant. That’s trash, I hope . . .
Trump has disavowed Loomer, sort of. He calls her “a courageous woman” for engaging in “ambush journalism” and otherwise disrupting her perceived enemies. Several social media sites have banned her.
I predict that Loomer will not disappear from the Trump camp but that the ex-president will distance himself somewhat in the coming weeks, as Loomer is toxic. If you doubt that, just read about her on Wikimedia and read a few of her quotes, including her suggesting that 9/11 may have been “an inside job.”
Is Trump disintegrating?
How many times is this tired question going to be asked? In my case, a few hundred more times (more than once a day). I keep seeing signs of Trump’s decline, but polls still show the presidential race to be close. And given the eccentricities of the Electoral College, Trump may yet move back into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in January.
Did anyone say “Secretary of Homeland Security Loomer?” I hope not.
Other issues:
This morning, Polaris Dawn, the private spaceflight funded by a billionaire, ended with a splashdown. The crew is safe, but that doesn’t mean that these trips to the heavens are a good idea.
Last week, we also learned that the Biden administration is considering authorizing Ukraine to use long-range weapons in its war against Russia. Is this a good idea? Early in the war, many of us worried that a desperate Putin would resort to tactical nuclear weapons if necessary. If more attacks start hitting inside Russia, will Putin reach a tipping point? I’m worried.
That is it for now. I will post my Medium article on Ms. Loomer tomorrow. Enjoy the week ahead.
