This will be a shorter Friday Insights this week because, although much has happened in Trumpland this week, little of it is new.
The President’s actions are becoming predictable. For example, he appointed yet another of his 2024 defense lawyers, in this case, Emil Bove. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Bove, who defended Trump in his New York fraud case (which Trump lost) and worked on the dismissal of felony charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, will serve as an Appellate Court judge in the Third Circuit.
Trump also pardoned the Chrisleys, who were convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud. The lovely couple secured $36 million in bank loans via fraud to support their lavish lifestyle and were in jail. Donald Trump set them free.
Trump also indicated he is considering pardoning the criminals who planned to kidnap Michigan Governor Whitmer. I read the details of the case several months ago. It was a politically motivated crime that could have ended in an assassination.
And then you have several mad rants posted on Truth Social. Go there—just put “Donald Trump Truth Social” into a search engine—and see what the President of the United States does when not golfing, signing executive orders, hosting champion sports teams in the White House, or reviewing the unfairness of the 2020 election.
Original Sin.
Trump is working diligently to remake America to conform to his sick vision. The President believes he is on a mission from God and even posted an image promising that “nothing can stop what is coming.”
Unfortunately, Trump may be correct, but not because God is directing his actions—the Pope will confirm this if you can contact him. Instead, the reason will be Democrats and others focusing on the mental deterioration of the wrong President. Instead of documenting the insanity taking place in the White House, on Trump golf courses, on Air Force One, and anywhere else the President is, some writers and journalists want to make sure we all understand that Biden was old and should not have run for re-election.
The message these writers send is that somehow, Biden is responsible for Trump being in the White House.
IMHO, we are ill-served by efforts to “prove” that Biden was unfit to serve as President. I would trade him for Trump in a heartbeat.
Biden often showed his age, but was surrounded by competent and honest advisors. Even if you disagree with all of Biden’s policies, there are no instances of grift to report unless you buy into Trump’s “Biden crime family” narrative. I don’t.
The press should be targeting the mistakes and misdeeds of the 47th President because that is their job. Why not leave the autopsy of Biden’s four years to historians?
And why produce a work product that enables Trump and his co-conspirators to use the “two wrongs make a right” justification for so many of its destructive policies? At the top of the list are tariffs. I was told earlier this week that Trump’s tariff policies are nothing more than a continuation of Biden’s, and because Biden may have imposed tariffs in an illegal manner, Trump can do the same.
As long as the nonsensical focus on Biden rather than Trump continues, the prospects of stopping MAGA decrease. And that includes the 2026 mid-term elections.
Polls show that despite everything Trump has done, said, and promises to do, 90 percent of the people who voted for him still approve of his Presidency. Who are these folk?
Thank you.
That’s enough for today. I may have more to say on Sunday, but I am trying to avoid reporting on events that professional journalists are better equipped to report.
Enjoy your weekend. Rain is predicted today in the D.C. area. I plan to read a book and listen to classical music.
